Nexus Power Jelly Bean is coming to the Galaxy Nexus Nexus S and Motorola Xoom

Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, is starting to roll out for the Galaxy Nexus now. The Nexus S and the Motorola Xoom (quasi Nexus) will be getting Jelly Bean in the near future too.

There have been some complaints that Android 4.1 may have come too soon, with Googles OEM partners still completing their upgrades to Android 4.0. On the other hand this could be Google stab at taking control of its ecosystem. For the past three years, we have considered the Google Nexus phone a reference product. Than Google re-opened its online sales network for its Galaxy Nexus, and offered it at a unbelievable US$349 price of contract. With the launch of the Nexus 7 and Nexus Q, Nexus is on the verge of becoming a household name, in the same way Android is.

Imagine a Nexus S buyer back in 2011. After a few months, he may have suffered from buyers regret, seeing the dual core Androids that came out after that. But by 2012, any regret would would have been lost when they got Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich and watch owners of other phones ask when they would be getting their tasty threat. Now the Nexus S Owners eagerly await Jelly Bean, and owners of other devices just receiving Ice Cream Sandwich will be behind the curve yet again.

Google has done what it can to convince its OEMs to update their phones and tablets faster. It made its OEMs commit to an 18 month support commitment. Yet, we see Samsung phones like the Galaxy S Advance, launched months after Android 4.0, with no commitment to an Android 4.0 upgrade.

This quick roll-out of updates might be Google pushing its OEMs to stick with vanilla Android. Sure you can pick Samsungs or HTCs latest and greatest, but if you want Google latest and greatest, go with a Nexus device.

With the Nexus 7 Google is going into the table market in a big way. The Nexus Q aims to put Nexus in your living room. If the rumor proves true that Google might launch more than one Nexus phone this year than, it could be Google saying if OEM wont provide Android updates in a timely manner, Google will give you phones that will get those updates.

Me, I am convinced, my next Android phone, will be a Nexus phone.

Three Samsung Phones Thrown Out Of Apple Patent Fight

After presenting all the evidence in its possession, Apple rested its case in the patent dispute case against Samsung today. In the case Apple brought against the South Korean consumer electronics giant, the burden of proof fell on Apple to prove that Samsung knowingly copied the design of the iPhone when designing its Galaxy line of devices. As expected, Samsung argued that Apple failed to meet its legal obligation and that the case should be dropped.

Judge Lucy Koh was having none of it, though she did concede some of Samsung’s points in the objection, deciding to throw out a few Samsung devices from the laundry list of affected devices. The Samsung Galaxy Ace, as well as the international versions of the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II were dismissed from the case. The move can be viewed as a hollow victory for Samsung, as the majority of the damages being sought in the case pertain to the U.S. variants of these devices. Further, Judge Koh’s dismissal does not prevent Apple from going after Samsung for the dismissed devices in pending cases with Samsung USA’s parent company.

Now that Apple’s case is finished, Samsung’s task is clear; the company must prove to the jury that it is not infringing on Apple’s patents. In addition, Samsung will try to persuade the court that Apple shouldn’t have been granted the patents in the first place, either because the technology itself was not patentable, or more likely, that Apple’s inventions weren’t actually new. Samsung will base at least part of its argument on a service called LaunchTile, which was designed to allow one-handed use of a smartphone through zooming, and was created in the summer of 2004.

Once the claims from Apple have been properly defended, Samsung will turn its focus to its counter suit against Apple. Samsung is arguing that Apple violated some of Samsung’s own patents, and the company will attempt to convince the jury to rule in its favor.

The case should be winding down this week, giving the jury time to deliberate and decide whether or not Apple should be awarded the $2.5 to $2.75 million in damages it is seeking.

Kindle Fire is Defiantly NOT a Google Nexus 7 Killer

It may be turning heads, but the Amazon Kindle Fire HD falls short of the Google Nexus 7 killer that some people would like it to be... As our Amazon Kindle Fire HD vs Google Nexus 7 shows, there are certainly some significant areas in which the former moves past its 7-inch rival, However, there are other key areas which it absolutely does not exceed expectations and they remain potentially important to a big swathe of tablet buyers.

Speedy

The first problem for me is the dual-core processor in the Kindle Fire HD 7; the Google Nexus 7s Tegra 3 is a quad-core affair and it helps make the tablet an absolute dream to use, The Nexus 7 remains one of the most responsive devices on the market, flitting between apps and games effortlessly, multitasking with aplomb.

Although having a dual-core processor has been justified by some companies as more efficient in a mobile device (something which is a hot-ticket conversation in mobile phones at the moment), I think many people would trade a couple of hours life for a big boost in top end performance.

The Kindle Fire HD does, of course, give you a big chunk more storage for your buck, doubling up at both price points - and thats definitely a big bonus, with 8GB feeling paltry given the size of HD content... But for many, its not the reason to buy Amazon that it will be billed as.

Weighty problem?

Weight-wise, the Nexus 7 is pretty much perfect for one handed use; any heavier and it would feel uncomfortable, So it remains to be seen what the (admittedly small) bump in heaviness does in terms of comfort – its something that needs time to be, ahem, weighed up.

But then we move on to the operating systems and I cant help but feel it is there that the Nexus 7– for me at least – lands the crucial blow... I get why Amazon has taken Android 4.0 and made it more suitable to its target audience, namely people who buy stuff from them.

Its why the tablet costs as little as it does: Amazon swallows a portion of the cost in the knowledge that you later deposit pots of cash in its virtual registers by buying films, music, books, apps and physical goods from it.

So you would expect to be shoved in the direction of its shop regularly and firmly - but its competitor, although not shy about pushing you to its own Google Play store, is less in your face about it.

The Google tablet is running the beautifully designed vanilla Jelly Bean 4.1, has more apps, more freedom and, you would assume, is going to receive future updates to Android sooner than Amazons tab.

Data

Of course, you dont get the Kindle books or breadth of material that you get with Amazon, but you can run the Kindle app and Google Books should you desire.

In truth, the thing that would massively improve both tablets is a mobile data version, bringing the joys of 3G or 4G on the go.

And if the rumours are right, the Nexus 7 3G is on the way; and that could tip the scales even further towards Google in the 7-inch market.

Microsoft Bing Is Not To Be Outdone With Google Yahoo

For real-time search business, Google has the Instant Preview and Yahoo has Search Direct. Not to be outdone, Microsoft also fix Bing Mobile.

This week, the companys new shake hands with Nokia is conducting a series of updates on Bing Mobile. The goal, to make a feature in Windows Phone 7 (WP7) is more qualified.

With this new update, quoted from Engadget, Friday (03/25/2011), users can better feel the speed in terms of image and location search. Understand it, WP7 Bing at this time was lost in the search for a location directly compared to Google.

At the end of the year, Bing Mobile also will support HTML5 format. All these features are intended to allow users to search locations, the latest film whatever is in the theater, and other things that can be done with a single search button.

Sony Ericson Xperia Play In Spain Soon

We hope this is an early April Fools joke - the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play will apparently be launching in Spain on 1 April, for the hefty 649 euro SIM-free price. It will come with 6 games preloaded but the price still seems pretty steep.

Vodafone Spain will offer the white Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play in the first 15 days but the other operators will get it afterwards. The black one will be available from the start (1 April). At this point its not clear how much the Play will cost on a contract.

Still, without a contract the Play will cost €649 (equivalent to $900) says Sony Ericsson Spain and the phone will come with 6 games pre-installed (doesnt say which). There should be 50 more games available through the Android Market at launch.

In the UK, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play will be available a day early (31 March), where the white version is exclusive to O2 and Amazon.de has it on pre-order for around €540.

The price is certainly ambitious but the XPERIA Play does have the appeal of being perfectly suited for playing Sony PlayStation games on the go and launches with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Were curious to see how that works out.

Google Nexus 4 price at just US 299

Google has officially announced the  LG built Nexus 4.   The Nexus 4 is built around a 4.7 screen has a 1280×768 resolution at 320ppi, the same display used in LG’s skinned Optimus G.  It also has the Optimus’s Krait-based Snapdragon S4Pro SoC.  Like the Optimus G, it comes with 2GB of system memory and a 2100mAh battery. It has an 8MP primary camera and a 1.3 MP secondary camera. It comes out of the box with Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean).

Despite all this, it is not a high end phone. The Google Nexus 4 is not designed to compete with the LG Optimus G or even the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X. Google dropped LTE support and priced it is a mid-level phone. You also have to a choice between 8 GB or 16GB of storage, without a MicroSD slot.

While that is a bit disappointing, the price of US$299 for the 8 GB model and US$349 for the 16 GB model easily make up for the absence of LTE. Google is leaving LTE and the high end to its OEM partners. If LTE is a must, the LG Optimus G is the LTE version of the Google Nexus 4.

I wont complain though. I expect to see this phone hit the local markets at below 18K. Not bad for a quad core 4.7-inch HD phone. With local carriers LTE coverage being limited and no phone LTE plans being offered in the Philippines, the Google Nexus 4 is tailor fitted for the Philippine market.

All of a Sudden the Chromebook is a Perfect Fit

When Google released it first Chromebook in December 2010, it did not look like it had a bright future. I mean, it looked like an internet only Netbook, and at that time Netbooks were on the death spiral already. The tablet was here.

Less than US$250, shipped

Now two years later, it does seem like the perfect tertiary device for many users. Looks at you daily routine. Email and social networking is mostly handled by your smartphone. When you want to do some web browsing, you reach over for you tablet. Your gaming habit is more and more moving from your PC, to your iPad or Nexus 7. Hell, games are much cheaper on Android and iOS than on any other platform, and getting better each year. You edit pictures to upload to the web, which you took with the camera on your smartphone. Why not edit it directly on your mobile device and upload it? Cut out the middle man.

Your laptop, which was your pride and joy in the previous decade, well, you now power it up less and less each day. There are the power users who need a powerful laptop or desktop. But in these days when people are more and more spending more on smartphones than ever before and are gravitating to the tablet, who want to spend US$1,000 on a laptop they will use to compose long emails, write a report or record their monthly expenses.

Chromebooks, come in at US$200-US$400. The right price for a tertiary device. Once you factor in the software, it even gets cheaper. No need to buy and Office Suite or Photo Editing app. No need to pay for OS updates on a yearly basis.

I could never give up a laptop and its keyboard. I type too much. But I dont feel like replacing my MacBook Air with another one. For the past two weeks, I have tested just using the Chrome Bowser and web apps, and am doing fine.  I am thinking more in terms of an iPad mini or Nexus 7, and a Chromebook come replacement time. The pair would cost just over half the price of the Cheapest Macbook Air. Hell, the pair would cost as much as a entry level laptop.

All of a sudden, the Chromebook is a perfect fit.

Leaked Image Might Just Be The Galaxy S IV

What we have here is an image received by Sammobile and its a tip from their insider at Samsung. They were tipped an image of the next gen Galaxy S device dubbed the Galaxy S IV. This image still cant be confirmed of its originality yet but it sure looks legit with no tricks up its sleeve. This design looks like the Galaxy S III and a bit like a scaled down Galaxy Note II. The picture also revealed that there is no longer capacitive and a physical home button present which means on screen soft keys. As usual the volume rocker is on the left with the lock key on the right. Above the device are the usual array of sensors and earpiece with a front facing camera.

Lenovo ideapad S405

Two months ago we already took a look at the low cost slim and light "Ultrabook like" laptops from Lenovo, the 13.3-inch S300 and the 14-inch S400.  These two laptops are both just 0.8-inches thin and weigh in a just under 4 pounds. The S300 costs just Php21,995 without an OS, and the S400 comes in at Php24,995 without an OS.

Lenovo has released an AMD variant of its S series ideapad, the Lenovo ideapad S405, this time powered by an AMD A6-4455M accelerated processing unit which features AMD Radeon 7450M grpahics. This one is price higher at Php27,995, but includes a Windows 8 license. The other specifications are the same with a 500 GB hard drive, USB 3.0, card reader, HDMI out, Bluetooth and WiFi. The S405 comes with less RAM than the S400, with only 2 GB instead of 4GB.

The AMD A6-445M has decent power for everyday tasks with PassMark CPU Benchmark of 1421 points.  This is a bit slower than the Intel Core i3 2367M. While I do have PassMark CPU Benchmarks for this CPU it should be at about the 1700-1800 point range.

The Intel powered S400 is my favorite among the three, but if you prefer an AMD version the S405 is worth a look.

Sharp SH631

The is a new player in the Philippine smartphone market, and it has a pair of very interesting offerings. The new player is Sharp, and the more interesting offering is the Sharp SH631.

The Sharp SH631 has a large 4.5-inch display, with a decent qHD (540 x 960) resolution. The phone runs on Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with a Sharp Feel UX UI. Like a Nexus phone is has soft keys on the display rather than dedicated buttons. However, it does not follow the standard Android 4 three key format, and instead displays four keys. The large screen is fitted in a trim 127.6x 66 x 9.5 mm package which weighs in at 117 grams.

The phone is not speed demon, coming with a dual-core 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, on a MTKMT6577 chipset, and PowerVR SXG531T graphics processing unit. lower end The PowerVR card probably being it bottleneck. Also, the phone comes with 512 MB of RAM, which is the minimum required to run Android 4.x.

Internal storage is only 4 GB, but it does come with a MicroSD card slot. The battery is a decent sized 1650 mAh unit. You also get a 8MP primary camera which can record HD video, and a VGA front camera. All the other expected functionalities are there, with HSPA, A-GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

All in all not terrible exciting, but also not bad for the Php14,990 asking price.
